Do John Fisher and Oprah Winfrey know each other? Are they family? Are they business partners? Many people search for their names together, so we checked public sources to find out.
The short answer: we found no record that links them as relatives, partners, or co-investors.
Their careers are very different. Fisher comes from the family that started Gap, and he owns the Athletics baseball team. Oprah Winfrey built a media company around her talk show.
This article shows what the records say about each person. It also covers news that older articles may miss. Since 2025, Fisher has been trying to sell most of the San Jose Earthquakes. In July 2026, Winfrey said she will close her girls’ school in South Africa at the end of 2027.
Is There Any Connection Between Them?
We looked for three kinds of links: family, business, and shared causes.
Are They Related?
We found no record that they are related. Forbes says Fisher is the youngest of three sons of Gap founders Doris and Donald Fisher. Britannica says Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, in 1954. Neither source mentions the other person.
Are They Business Partners or Co-Investors?
We found no shared company, deal, or investment. Fisher’s Forbes profile lists the people and companies tied to him. It names the Athletics, Gap, his brothers, his mother, and Stanford’s business school. Oprah Winfrey is not on that list.
Their own businesses stay separate. Fisher runs a family investment office and owns sports stakes. Winfrey runs a media company and owns real estate. The sections below give the details.
One limit applies here. We cannot prove that no private link exists. We can only say that we found none in public sources.
Why Their Names Appear Together Online
We found no source that explains why people search for these two names together. We will not guess.
We can point to one fact. Both people sit on Forbes’ real-time billionaires list, and their ranks are close. On the dates we checked, Fisher ranked 1,162nd and Winfrey ranked 1,208th. We cannot say this is the reason people search for them together.
Who They Are: Background and Wealth
John Fisher and the Gap Legacy
Gap started small. Don and Doris Fisher opened the first Gap store on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco in 1969. According to Gap Inc.’s history page, the shelves held only Levi’s jeans and record tapes.
John Fisher is their youngest son. Forbes says he is 65 and lists Gap as the source of his wealth. He stepped down from Gap’s board in May 2022. His brothers Robert and William still sit on it.
Fisher studied at Princeton and then earned an MBA at Stanford. Forbes lists him as president of Pisces, Inc., the Fisher family’s investment company. It also lists him as a founding partner of the investment firm Sansome Partners.
Oprah Winfrey’s Path From Broadcasting to Media Ownership
Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, Britannica says. She won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. She left to work in broadcasting and finished her degree in 1986.
Her talk show went national in 1986 and became the highest-rated talk show in the country. The last episode aired in May 2011. Forbes says the show ran for 25 years.
Ownership made the big difference. Winfrey formed Harpo Productions in 1986, Britannica says. Forbes says she reinvested the profits from the show and from films her company helped produce, such as Beloved and Selma. It estimates those profits added up to more than $2.8 billion.
Net Worth: Latest Forbes Figures
Forbes tracks net worth in real time. These are the numbers we saw:
- John Fisher: $3.6 billion on November 1, 2026, per his Forbes profile.
- Oprah Winfrey: $3.4 billion on November 4, 2026, per her Forbes profile.
These figures change often. Other sites list other numbers because each one uses its own method. We use Forbes because it shows the date of each figure. Open the linked pages to see today’s numbers.
Business Holdings Compared
Athletics, Earthquakes and Investments
The Athletics. Forbes calls Fisher the majority owner. The team left Oakland after the 2024 season.
CBS News reported that the team plays at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento for at least three seasons, starting in 2025. The plan is to open a new stadium in Las Vegas for the 2028 season. At a Las Vegas Stadium Authority meeting, officials said the stadium, which they put at about $2 billion, was on track.
The Earthquakes. In June 2025, the club announced a process to sell most of its ownership. It hired the bank Moelis & Co. to lead the sale. The club has named Fisher as its main owner since 2008. Forbes lists the Earthquakes among his smaller stakes.
We found no announcement of a finished sale. Check the club’s website for updates.
Other holdings. Forbes says Fisher also holds a smaller stake in Celtic, a soccer club in Scotland. Pisces and Sansome Partners, described above, round out his investments.
Harpo, OWN and the Media Brand
Harpo began as the company that produced her show. In 1996, Winfrey started Oprah’s Book Club on the show. Britannica says the books she picked quickly rose on the bestseller charts.
She also built a television network. Forbes says she launched OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, in 2011. In 2020, she sold most of her OWN stake to Warner Bros. Discovery and took shares in that company in return.
Forbes also says her real estate includes homes in California and 2,100 acres of land in Hawaii.
Ownership Styles Compared
Fisher and Winfrey both own things, but they own different things in different ways.
Fisher’s wealth starts with Gap. Forbes uses a Self-Made Score to show how much of a fortune a person built on their own. The scale runs from 1 to 10. Forbes gives Fisher a 2.
Winfrey’s wealth, Forbes says, grew from her show. She took ownership of it and reinvested the profits.
The assets differ too. Fisher holds Gap stock, sports teams, and investment firms. Winfrey holds a production company, shares in Warner Bros. Discovery, and land and homes.
Education and Philanthropy
Fisher: KIPP and the Charter School Growth Fund
Charter schools are public schools that run on their own. Fisher backs two groups that support them.
- Forbes says he is chairman of the KIPP Foundation, a nonprofit network of public charter schools.
- Forbes says he sits on the board of the Silicon Schools Fund.
We found no donation totals that we could check, so we list none.
Oprah: Leadership Academy and Foundation
Winfrey opened the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in 2007, on a campus near Johannesburg. Former South African president Nelson Mandela was among the guests at the opening. The school served academically talented girls from underprivileged families.
The Associated Press reported that her foundation ran and funded the school. More than 500 girls have graduated, according to the foundation. Soon after the school opened, students accused a dormitory matron of abuse. Winfrey traveled to South Africa, apologized publicly, and ordered an independent investigation. The matron was cleared of criminal charges in 2010.
The same AP report covers the 2026 news. Winfrey said she will close the school at the end of 2027. The plan always called for handing the campus to the provincial education department. The Gauteng government will now take over the campus. Students who are enrolled now can finish their studies with financial support, said the province’s education minister. The academy said her work will continue through a larger national scholarship program for talented girls at leading schools.
How We Checked This
We read each person’s Forbes profile and checked who and what Forbes ties to each of them. We read the official history page of Gap Inc., the club statement on the Earthquakes sale, and Britannica’s profile of Oprah Winfrey. We used reports from the Associated Press and CBS News for events in 2025 and 2026. We wrote only claims that we could link to a source.
Three limits apply. We cannot prove that no private link exists between the two. Net worth figures change daily. News about the Earthquakes sale and the Las Vegas stadium may change after this date.

Final Word
John Fisher and Oprah Winfrey have no documented link in the sources we checked. They are not known to be family, partners, or co-investors.
Their stories do compare well. Fisher’s wealth starts with the company his parents built, and he holds stakes in teams and investment firms. Winfrey’s wealth grew from owning her own show. Both back education, in different ways.
Both stories also keep changing. Fisher is trying to sell most of the Earthquakes while his Athletics wait for a Las Vegas stadium. Winfrey plans to close her school in South Africa and shift her giving to scholarships. Check the linked pages for the latest facts.
